Focusing in on coaching search

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Here are few more details about, and insights into, Long Beach State's search for its next men's basketball coach, with a few guesses tossed in - some of which might even be of the educated variety:

The "search committee" will be made up of Vic Cegles (athletic director), Dr. F. King Alexander (president) and Doug Robinson (Vice President for Student Affairs).

Cegles, who was involved in men's basketball coaching searches during stints as an associate AD at Arizona State and Temple, will be the person initiating contact with possible candidates, and sorting through the direct (from coaches themselves) and indirect (via other coaches or coaches' representatives) contacts from those who would like to be considered candidates.

Wizards hope Hayes heats up in Butler's absence

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Washington Wizards swingman Jarvis Hayes has been mired in a season-long shooting slump.

But he is confident he can play back to the form that made him one of the NBA's top first-year players four seasons ago when he averaged 9.6 points and was second-team all-rookie.

With forward Caron Butler, their third-leading scorer, sidelined for at least four more games with a sore left knee, the Wizards need Hayes as they try to hold on to first place in the Southeast Division. Butler (19.1 points) combines with Gilbert Arenas (28.8) and Antawn Jamison (19.7) to form the league's highest-scoring trio of teammates. He also provides the Wizards much-needed toughness and is their best post scorer.

Warriors falter vs. Jazz

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

SALT LAKE CITY - Maybe the Warriors of yore, the teams made up of youngsters just trying to find their way in the NBA, could have taken some comfort in what went down Tuesday night at the EnergySolutions Arena.

The Golden State squad of today, however, has no use for moral victories. So finding themselves ahead of Northwest Division-leading Utah at the end of three quarters meant nothing to the Warriors after the Jazz outscored them by 10 points in the fourth period to pull out a 104-100 victory.

And no one in the Golden State locker room wanted to discuss learning experiences after falling into a virtual tie for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY MISSED Warriors stumble vs. Jazz

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

The Golden State squad of today, however, has no use for moral victories. So finding themselves ahead of Northwest Division-leading Utah at the end of three quarters meant nothing to the Warriors after the Jazz outscored them by 10 points in the fourth period to pull out a 104-100 victory.

And no one in the Golden State locker room wanted to discuss learning experiences after falling into a virtual tie for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

"We gave up a golden opportunity tonight," said Warriors forward Al Harrington, whose career-high seven 3-pointers and game-high 27 points went to waste. "It's very upsetting because we needed this game more than they did, obviously. It's too late in the season to say you're still learning. It's about just getting things done."

Consecutive wins still elude Grizzlies

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

It has moved into the regular conversations that usually dominate locker rooms, right up there with women, cars and movies.

That the Grizzlies remain the only NBA team without consecutive victories this season -- courtesy of Tuesday night's 114-103 loss to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets -- is something no longer planted in the back of their minds.

The hope is that this fast fact isn't something they have to discuss beyond April 18 when the Grizzlies' play their final regular-season game for this campaign.

Biedrins hopes to score more after turning 21

Friday, March 16, 2007

Just giving him a few more shots would be good enough.

As the Warriors return from their three-day hiatus this evening against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Biedrins ranks second in the NBA in field-goal accuracy, yet he's second-from-last on his own team in shots per minute on the floor. At 12.0 attempts per 48 minutes, Biedrins puts up fewer shots than every other Warrior except for Adonal Foyle.

Even on a night like Monday, when Biedrins went 8-for-8 en route to 16 points in the Warriors' 117-100 win over the Dallas Mavericks, the third-year product of Latvia is often overlooked. Only three times in the Warriors' last 31 games has Biedrins been given the chance to launch more than nine shots.
