When Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio last week outlined why property taxes in the state should be eliminated and replaced with a 2.5-percent sales-tax increase, he specifically cited Leon County as an example of a local government that, in the wake of major increases in the value of real estate, had been fiscally responsible.
Officials here undoubtedly appreciated the speaker's acknowledgment. But the speaker's plan, which is still very much a work in progress and open for lots more discussion, could nevertheless punish Leon County. Local governments in the capital city already face unusual financial challenges because so much property is government owned and therefore off the tax rolls.

Doomsday will not come overnight. Most Americans barely will notice the gradual decline of the most powerful economy on Earth. But if political leaders don't do something soon, Doomsday will creep up on us all, ready or not.
How can that message compete with Howie, Larry, Virgie and the withering corpse of Anna Nicole Smith? As cable entertainment "news" channels brought Americans gavel-to-gavel coverage of the spectacle inside Broward County Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin's courtroom last week, the message of Comptroller General David Walker and his Fiscal Wake-Up Tour of Doom went virtually unnoticed.
There's spectacle, and then there's spectacle.

Keep your friends close — and your frenemies even closer.
What’s that? You’ve never heard of frenemies? It’s really quite simple: Friend + enemy = Frenemy.
It’s not necessarily a new concept — businesses have long used the term to describe friendly competitors.

Other than a passing fancy for Justin Timberlake and an ability to bear male children, I've never had much in common with Britney Spears. Unlike poor Brit-Brit, I've never been photographed driving with an infant on my lap, and I don't enjoy indulging in Red Bull-tinis with a Marlboro chaser. Except for a brief period following an unfortunate tanning incident in the early '90s, I've never been prone to leave the house sans underpants. And, fortuna...

PARIS -- In the modeling world, there are tales of rags to riches -- and then there's the one about Marie de Villepin.
The 20-year-old daughter of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin is the new face of French fashion house Givenchy's latest fragrance, "Ange ou D?mon" ("Angel or Demon"). And she walked down the runway for Italian brand Krizia at last week's Milan fashion shows.

Does everybody on the planet spend time kicking the president of the United States? I ask this because it seems that we are in the midst of an open season on George W. Bush.
I've never seen a presidency where everybody shoots at the president and nobody defends him, except his wife and Tony Snow. People who oppose "waterboarding" the enemy would be happy to see George Bush undergo the ordeal.
He's not even immune from attacks from people he picks to fill the highest offices in his administration. He's forced to sit in the Oval Office and watch the man he chose to be secretary of defense publicly disagree with him on nationwide TV by telling Sen. Carl Levin we are losing the war in Iraq, an argument the president rejects out of hand.

SEATTLE Luckily for the founders of High Maintenance Bitch, which sells high-end pooch products, little princesses eventually grow into women dog owners preferably with spare cash and a strong affinity for double entendres.
"Our company is probably the most high-end pet brand in the world," co-founder Lori Pacchiano said.
Though Paris Hilton and Tyra Banks may coo over products such as Gel-ous Bitch bath gel and Street Walker paw cleanser, the store has drawn the ire of some residents of Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood who dislike the sign that hangs outside the company's flagship boutique.

The dire state of the American "news" industry is evidenced in observing that the dopey antics of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and the late Anna Nicole Smith have fascinated us and, in many cases, led broadcasts, which make the bogus claim to be news and news-oriented but which are, in fact, entertainment programs tailored to the voyeuristic American.
These individuals have in common that they are famous for simply being famous, having made no serious contribution to our lives or our culture, in fact diminishing our society. It is sad to realize that some who view these characters seek to emulate them.
It is easy to point the finger at the media for bringing us nonsense and fluff packaged as a legitimate story, but it is we who are to blame because we have increasingly become a culture of the simpleminded through our "bimbo love."

To hear it from a new crop of "gifting suite" organizers like Greg Kwiat, lead sponsor of the Kwiat Diamond Suite Featuring L'Oreal Paris and Arnold Brant, swag in 2007 is all about "making a difference" and "giving back."
"If there is a great theme here, it's that charitable giving is cool again," he said. "It's hip. It's meaningful. And why not try to share and give back as part of the Hollywood experience?"
Back in the proverbial day — well, before last summer, to be exact — pulling in a valuable haul of high-end "gifts" didn't require much more than an A-list pedigree and an acquisitive nature. Swag was a windfall of fame, given away to celebrities al gratis in exchange for their implicit product endorsement. But then came the IRS decision to tax swag as income. And before you could say "1099 form," the film academy decreed it would stop giving Oscar presenters its legendary gift baske...

Not since Sammy Davis Jr. has there been as multi-talented an entertainer as Jamie Foxx. Like Davis, Foxx is an actor, singer, comedian, impressionist, ladies man and cutup, doing it all with personality, style and not a little ego.
The only thing Foxx doesn't do is dance, unless you count his hip-grinding, crotch-grabbing moves, which he did while singing his salacious come-on songs (he can, however, make his tongue dance).
Foxx had a big crowd loving his every change of character and mood Friday night at KeyArena, where he did a stand-up routine, sang with a 10-piece band, channeled Ray Charles -- as he did in his Oscar-winning starring role in "Ray," the Charles biopic -- and closed with more singing.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A tearful Britney Spears defiantly shaved her head at a Los Angeles hair salon after the owner refused to take part in the embattled pop star's latest extreme makeover, news reports said on Saturday.
The Friday evening visit to Esther's Haircutting Studio in the Tarzana district of Los Angeles was followed by a trip to a tattoo parlor where the 25-year-old mother of two young sons added two designs to her body.
The transformation came on the same day People magazine and other entertainment media reported that Spears recently entered a rehabilitation center in the Caribbean island of Antigua and checked out a day later. The reports were denied by Spears' representatives.

NEW YORK - News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch says the new Fox Business Channel will be "more business-friendly" than rival CNBC, making that point on the day he announced his network would launch at the end of the year.

Within a day of Murdoch's statement on Feb. 8, Fox News business anchor Neil Cavuto told MarketWatch that "we're going to be a channel for America - not for old white men with money."

Mark my words, Anne: This Internet thing will never last. It's a fad. Who wants a computer in their home?
Yahoo has been the nation's most-visited Internet "property" (it includes many individual sites) for more than 10 years. That might change in 2007, with Google taking the top spot. That's thanks in part to Google's acquisition of YouTube, the site that allows users to post their short videos online.

Sofia Coppola received her worst reviews for her third turn in the director's chair, a fresh biopic titled "Marie Antoinette."
Kirsten Dunst, in her second go-round with Coppola (the first was 1999's "Virgin Suicides") plays the French queen, husband to Jason Schwartzman's King Louis XVI.
Coppola, as usual, puts together an aesthetically pleasing picture with excellent scenery and costume work. The score also is strong, featuring a mix of modern and period music. This musical approach didn't work too well in the medieval movie "A Knight's Tale" (2001) -- joust scenes with Queen, anyone? -- but Coppola makes it work here.

The things we do for love, we are reminded this week, far exceed walking in the rain and the snow when there's nowhere to go, as the old pop band 10cc put it.
They now include donning a wig and trench coat, packing an air pistol and knife, dressing in a diaper to avoid toilet stops, and driving some 900 miles to pepper-spray a romantic rival in the pre-dawn hours in an airport near Walt Disney World.
As citizens of Planet Earth know, that is what Orlando, Fla., police allege astronaut Lisa Marie Nowak did earlier this week. Police charged Nowak, 43, a Navy captain, with the attempted murder of a woman she apparently believed was in love with the same man she lusted after - a fellow astronaut nicknamed Billy-O.
