'Dancing' may help Mills' image

Friday, March 23, 2007

LOS ANGELES - On an episode of "30 Rock," comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) informs co-workers he's on a religious quest.

"My attorney told me to join a church preemptively, 'cause juries are suspicious of celebrities who find religion after getting into trouble," he explains.

There could be an alternate approach to legal or public-relations damage control -- and it took Jerry Springer, of all people, to light the way for needy celebrities like Heather Mills.

Too sexy, too soon?

Thursday, March 22, 2007

From advertisements to magazine covers, the image of the promiscuous girl is being celebrated.

With her hit "Promiscuous," singer Nelly Furtado sold more albums than ever once she sexed up her image. Party girls Paris and Britney forget underwear for a night out, and teen girls echo those images on their MySpace pages.

All this has caught the attention of parents, educators and authors, and it also has caught the attention of the American Psychological Association, which last week released a report called "The Sexualization of Girls."

Tweety-brained nymphs, à la Britney, Paris, Lindsay and Nicole, earned major points for our 2006 best and worst list. So did pantyless protocol, trans fats, spiritual advisers, celebrity babies, Bluetooth, Rachael Ray, Masi Oka and the Playstation3-Nintendo Wii mania.

Democrats proved very trendy. The Iraq war, YouTube, Anna Nicole Smith, Borat, O.J. Simpson and pirates of the Caribbean persuasion drew serious attention. This year's winners and losers are dead ahead, mateys.

Teen lit enters 'golden age'

Thursday, March 22, 2007

In the fast moving times of today’s teen culture there’s a surprising trend that’s making bookstore owners and librarians very happy — teens are actually reading.

Some are calling it the “golden age” of reading, others are just happy that books haven’t been replaced with video games, iPods and the Internet. In fact, book pushers are using all the technology that defines the Millennium Generation to market to teens who may not always be willing to leave cyberspace to curl up with a good book.

“The technology is giving us an opportunity to reach kids more and more,” said Judy Nelson, president of the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association.

The Barkers are officially reunited

You?d think that when a woman throws a divorce party to celebrate the end of her marriage, the breakup is pretty final. But Shanna Moakler, who feted her freedom from Blink-182 rocker Travis Barker back in November, is now partying by his side again.

At her early birthday bash in Miami on Friday, the reality star proudly confirmed to People magazine buzz that the once-estranged couple is back together, saying, ?Yes, I?m madly in love with my husband.?

But the mom of two squashed another recent rumor surrounding the Barkers: ?While I hope one day to have more children with Travis, I am not pregnant.?

Theater Review

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

A collection of skits and songs about Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s, RiffRaff Productions' musical revue "Steppin' Out" lacks focus and flow.

Compiled, arranged, accompanied, designed and directed by Modesto keyboardist John Duerner, it veers haphazardly from slapstick comedy bits to serious monologues and back again.

There doesn't seem to be much of a plan for what the dozen performers are supposed to do when they aren't in a featured bit. Instead of leaving the stage, they sit or stand awkwardly in the background, counting the minutes until their next song.

Floating, bloating and avoiding the world

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

As you read this, I should (hopefully) be somewhere on a body of water, contemplating my next frosty adult beverage and whether I need another slathering of sunscreen. I do not plan on checking in with the world for approximately a week, which should be ample time for it to go to hell in a hand basket (I know hand baskets aren’t quite as trendy as say a Birkin bag but a lot can happen in a week when Paris Hilton’s drive of the fashion world can spin on a dime) without my immediate input.

By the time I am back, the world could be an entirely different place. For now, though, this is where things stand:

Anna Nicole has been buried next to her son but the paternity of her baby girl continues to flip-flop. I expect by my return for at least three more possible baby daddies to throw their hat in the ring.

Hey, You Look an Awful Lot Like ...

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Celebrity spotting is a favorite New York sport. So heads turned and horns honked at the line on 57th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues yesterday morning, outside the AMV Unitel Studios. Waiting in the line were Madonna, President George W. Bush, Roseanne Barr, David Letterman, Paris Hilton, Whitney Houston and many more. Robert De Niro kissed Roseanne hello, and the president and Madonna posed for a photograph.

It was all fake. A sharp-eyed observer would note at least two Rod Stewarts ? and, back from the dead, an Elvis Presley, a George Burns, a Harpo Marx and a few Frank Sinatras.

The occasion was the first of two days of auditions in New York for a new hourlong show on ABC, ?The Next Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?? which begins on May 30. About 100 people are expected to try out here. There were previously auditions in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and there will two more days in Orlando, Fla., at the end of the month.

Quarter-size dollars destined to fail every time

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

If you believe a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, consider this:

The U.S. Mint wanted to solve the problem of short-life paper dollars by substituting them with longer lasting dollar coins. So, in 1979, the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was issued. It was a dismal failure because it looked too much like a quarter. Most people predicted it would fail.

Then in 2000, the mint tried again with the Sacagawea dollar coin. No lessons learned here; it also looked too much like a quarter and, predictably, failed miserably. (Let's not even talk about how the mint bypassed events such as the first man on the moon or even the Lewis and Clark expedition itself to honor Sacagawea - someone who assisted Lewis and Clark halfway through the expedition).

Male Call: Guy refuses to take pride in paying for the dates

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Q Should the guy pay for the date? I'm struggling with a money issue with a guy I've been dating a few months. We make similar money - not much, but not minimum wage. We were splitting the bill when we first started dating.

After we had been dating for a while, I asked if we could treat each other to dates rather than split the bill, because it's nicer. We started doing this, and he does take me out sometimes, but not all the time. Now I'm anxious every time we go out: Is he going to pay? Isn't he?

The truth is, I prefer to be taken out by the guy. I know it's antiquated, but it makes me feel wanted, taken care of, special. I don't mind paying for dinner or drinks every second or third time. Most guys seem to take it as a point of pride that they're paying ... this guy doesn't.

A conscience that moved the world

Monday, March 19, 2007

What did Wilberforce "cure"? Two centuries ago, on March 25, 1807, one very persistent British backbencher secured the passage by Parliament of an Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade throughout His Majesty's realms and territories. It's not that no one remembers the disease ever existed, but that we recall it as a kind of freak pandemic -- a SARS or bird flu that flares up and whirrs round the world and is then eradicated. The American education system teaches it as such -- as a kind of wicked perversion the Atlantic settlers had conjured out of their own ambition.

In reality, it was more like the common cold -- a fact of life. The institution predates the word's etymology, from the Slavs brought from eastern Europe to the glittering metropolis of Rome. It predates by some millennia the earliest laws, such as the Code of Hammurabi in Mesopotamia. The first slave-owners on the North American continent were hunter-gatherers.

Barba touches Americas basic instinct

Monday, March 19, 2007

Starting with the Frenchie (Davis) Connection, in which it’s been wondered why Frenchie was kicked off "Idol" for her nude pictures, and why Antonella wasn’t given the boot for her not-quite-naked pictures.

Way I see it, it’s easy: Frenchie posed for an adult Web site, while Antonella took some pics for fun.

Frenchie was naked, Antonella was not.

IN FOCUS: Fixing our taxes

Monday, March 19, 2007

• Lawmakers ignore tax that majority supports

What is the reason that many of our lawmakers refuse to support a cigarette tax increase? Some have said it’s the principle. They just won’t vote for any tax increase. Others have yet to disclose their reluctance to increase this tax.

Magic shock Heat in strange fashion

Monday, March 19, 2007

MIAMI - This is downright baffling, almost as unexplainable as UFOs, Stonehenge and the paparazzi's fascination with Paris Hilton.

How in a matter of seven days could the Orlando Magic lose to the lowly Charlotte Bobcats, beat the Northwest Division-leading Utah Jazz, lay an egg against a tired Sacramento team and then rip Miami and its red-hot winning streak to shreds?

How in a matter of 24 hours could the Magic play with so little fire and precision against Sacramento, loser of five straight, and then turn around and dominate Miami, winners of nine in a row and undefeated in South Florida over the past two months?

John Katsilometes stamps out a rumor, with the help of the man who put his stamp on Las Vegas

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Michael Jackson might well be reviewing and evaluating several offers to perform as a headliner in Las Vegas, as spokeswoman Ramone Bain claimed last week.

We don't yet know whence all these purported offers have originated, but we do know that Steve Wynn is not interested in booking the onetime King of Pop and recent Las Vegas transplant.

Wynn himself snuffed out the Jackson rumors on Friday during a phone conversation with the Sun's Brendan Buhler. Wynn called to respond to Buhler's story that appeared in Friday's Sun, which examined the likelihood of a Jackson production show on the Strip and who might entertain signing the mercurial entertainer.
