GRAND BLANC -- There is no denying Tiger Woods' impact on golf. This week at the Buick Open, tournament officials will get a really good idea just how much impact the dominant player of the last decade has had on their event.
Woods is skipping the annual event at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club to stay home in Orlando with his wife and newborn daughter. It's the first time since 2001 that Woods will not play in the Buick Open.

Ionia's Kellie Watson, who was the state's overall top-rated girls basketball player last season as a junior, has committed to Notre Dame.
Watson, who's 6-foot-2, averaged 24 points last fall before shoulder surgery ended her season after 14 games. She had also considered Michigan, Michigan State and Duke.

Volleyball player Sarah Pavan of the University of Nebraska delivers a speech after being awarded the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year award during a ceremony at Columbia University.
What's this?
Nebraska volleyball star Sarah Pavan maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in biochemistry while leading the Cornhuskers to a 33-1 season and the NCAA title. Those achievements earned the junior from Kitchener, Ontario, the Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation's female college athlete of the year Monday. She's the fourth volleyball player to win the award and second straight winner from Canada.

AUSTIN - Tyler's William Estes fired a 76 Monday during the first round of qualifying in the Texas Legends Junior Tour's Match Play Championship at Onion Creek Club.
The golfers are playing the original course at Onion Creek.
Nigel Vessels of Beaumont leads the Boys 15-18 division with a 2 under 68. He is two strokes ahead of Matthew Henson of Austin and Johannes Veerman of Sweetwater.
