Tower exits, but area exec lands new job

Bill Olds was about to sign a lease that would give Tower Bank of Central Indiana a home at 96th and Meridian streets.

That was two months ago. On Monday, Fort Wayne-based Tower called it quits on the local market.A smash hit at home, much like the National Bank of Indianapolis is here, Tower realized it would cost about $15 million to make a go of it in Central Indiana, or twice the capital it had planned to invest.Then Tower's first-quarter results were weak, and the market sliced 10 percent from the stock's value. Free AIDS tests on Wednesday

To designate Wednesday as National HIV Testing Day, free AIDS testing and counseling will be available at four Memphis locations.

Here is the schedule:

Packer Clinic, Health Department, room 221, 814 Jefferson, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Pensacola Sports Association will join Pensacola and Escambia County in honoring Tampa Bay Buccaneers star and Pensacola native Derrick Brooks.

He will be the fourth inductee to the City of Champions Wall of Fame exhibit at Pensacola Regional Airport.

The dedication ceremony takes place Thursday at the Pensacola Civic Center at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission seats and $50 for general admission dinner tickets and are only available at the Pensacola Civic Center.

Bill focuses on emergency contraception

Rep. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, sponsored the bill that could be called for a floor vote by next week.

Opposing the measure, the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference likens the pill to abortion in some cases. The conference is seeking an amendment that would exclude religious-affiliated hospitals from issuing contraception.

Backers of the bill include Planned Parenthood of Pennsylvania Advocates and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape. Both groups say the bill protects women from further trauma and should apply to all hospitals.

The discussion focused on prejudice facing gay youths in area school.

About 30 people Sunday attended a forum seeking to end violence and abuse against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youths in area schools.

Sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Indiana, and Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays, the Creating Safe and Accepting Schools event at First Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Wayne St., included a panel discussion, information tables, a film and a group discussion.

Panel members included the Rev. Angela Shannon, pastor of Trinity English Lutheran Church, Amy Sorrell, former journalism teacher and adviser at Woodlan High School and the Rev. Terry Anderson, associate director of Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County.
