Anna Nicole judge feels at home in Middleburg
Tuesday, February 27, 2007MIDDLEBURG ? Florida Circuit Court Judge Larry Seidlin seemed to bask in the limelight as he oversaw the Anna Nicole Smith case last week, but the Middleburg homeowner apparently feels equally at home in rural central Pennsylvania.
The judge, who wept while delivering his ruling on who would get custody of the late Playboy pinup's remains, bought a Victorian house in downtown Middleburg with his in-laws in 2004 and has been renovating it for the past two years, said his sister-in-law, Valrie Kunes.
"He vacations here about three times a year. He loves it here," said Mrs. Kunes, a photographer who lives in Globes Mills with her husband, Steven.

Custody hearing for Smith's baby ends without a decision
Tuesday, February 27, 2007NASSAU, Bahamas - The future of Anna Nicole Smith's baby remained undecided Monday as a custody hearing in the Bahamas ended without a ruling.
Dozens of reporters and photographers gathered in a courtyard across from the white pillars of the country's pink, two-story colonial-era Supreme Court building, as lawyers and judges occasionally emerged, removing their white wigs.
The former Playboy model died Feb. 8 after collapsing at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., with the cause still undetermined. Since then, a series of legal battles began over her body, her baby and ultimately, her potential fortune - she was fighting for a share of her late husband's $500 million estate.

The much-anticipated disclosure of famous names never occurred, however. The evidence presented to the jury that convicted Gibson in 2000 of operating an international prostitution ring included phone books and other records in which, prosecutors said, she listed her customers. But authorities blacked out the names in publicly available court records.
Now, their identities are entering the public domain.

Anna Nicole Smith Fight Goes to Bahamas
Monday, February 26, 2007NASSAU, Bahamas - Legal experts predict Anna Nicole Smith's ex-boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, will have a tough time winning custody of her baby when the case moves to the Supreme Court of the Bahamas on Monday.
Howard K. Stern, the former model's partner, is listed on the birth certificate as the father and "there is a very strong legal presumption that what is stated in that document is accurate," said Thomas A. E. Evans, a prominent Bahamas attorney.
Birkhead, a Los Angeles-based photographer, also must contend with a competing claim from Virgie Arthur, Smith's mother, who has said she could provide a more stable home for Dannielynn than Stern and should therefore be awarded custody of the girl - who could inherit a fortune.

Methadone emerges as new killer
Monday, February 26, 2007Methadone, a potent opiate once used almost exclusively to treat heroin addicts, is increasingly being prescribed by doctors as a pain medication and abused by drug users searching for a cheap, easy way to get high, physicians and federal drug officials say.
The drug, which comes in pill or liquid form, recently has come under scrutiny in the death of former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. A doctor in Studio City prescribed methadone to Smith for pain treatment before she was found dead Feb. 8 in her Hollywood, Fla., hotel suite.
A coroner has yet to determine her cause of death, and the doctor said his treatment was "medically sound and appropriate."

Professor Wrestling: Trumped Up
Friday, February 23, 2007It's lecture time this week, and Donald Trump is center stage.
I think it's a stroke of genius that he's on board to be part of "WrestleMania 23." Trump takes on Vince McMahon in a "hair versus hair" match in Detroit, but neither blowhard will be in the ring.
Instead, they'll dispatch "representatives" to do their bidding. Vince has picked the monster heel Umaga (which I'm sure is subject to change), but Trump has yet to pick his wrestler. I'm hoping for The Great Khali myself. If so, the actual wrestling match will be horrible, but at least it'll be over quick. After all, what we're buying here isn't the match, but the aftermath.
