March marks Red Cross month as county unit nears 90th anniversary

Friday, March 23, 2007

With classes to teach and a 90th anniversary celebration in June to begin planning for, Pam Oxman of the Columbia County Red Cross has little time to celebrate. Oxman, the local Red Cross chapter's community development specialist, does see the work she's doing as the best way to recognize March as national Red Cross month, however. "I've been inundated with these classes and trying to recruit volunteers," Oxman said. "I haven't even had a chance to breathe, really. But doing the...

House panel OK's longer hours for slots

Friday, March 23, 2007

A House committee dealt Broward parimutuel betting sites a favorable hand Thursday when it approved proposals to lengthen the hours and loosen the regulations at state-licensed gambling venues.

One bill, sponsored by Rep. Jack Seiler, a Wilton Manors Democrat, would allow the Vegas-style slots to operate 18 hours a day during the week and 24 hours a day on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. It would increase the number of machines at each site from 1,500 to 2,000. And it would allow the tracks and jai-alai fronton to place ATMs in their facilities.

Unlike a previous version of the bill, the proposal approved Thursday would not change the 50 percent tax rate on slot revenues.

If you bet on the end, you'll lose

Friday, March 23, 2007

Sometimes, there's simply no reason to bet on the end, even with a big hand. Reason is, the only hands that can call you are the ones that can beat you.

With blinds at $100-$200 in last spring's $25,000-buy-in World Poker Tour Championship at Las Vegas' Bellagio, respected pro David Grey drew A-K suited in middle position. He faced a raise to $600 from Dan Harrington, the 1995 World Series of Poker champion. Grey called. Everyone else folded. The flop came A-K-J, rainbow, giving Grey top two pair and a backdoor flush draw. Harrington bet out $2,000.

Movie fans Michael Adams and Denise Hoepfner decided to see what all the fuss was about and picked up "Borat" this week. The movie was crude and offensive, but both loved it. Denise also picked up "Casino Royale" to satisfy her Daniel Craig addiction.

MICHAEL: I realized two things this week, Denise! First, we have fans! But more importantly, that I can find something totally offensive and repulsive, and still love everything about it.

DENISE: Well, that's marriage for you. And one complimentary e-mail does not a fan base make.

Ready for prime time

Friday, March 23, 2007

The medical residents on "Grey's Anatomy" eat more, socialize more and grope more in closets than the young doctors of "Grady's Anatomy."

So say Robin Lowman, Luis Tumialan, Andrea Meinerz and Nii-Daako Darko, the stars of the latter. Darko is a Morehouse School of Medicine resident. The others are from Emory University's medical school.

The CNN documentary about their lives airs Saturday and Sunday evening, featuring a a good-looking, personable group of residents from Grady Memorial Hospital who could be the stars of a prime-time drama. They were recommended by their superiors at the hospital, then chosen by CNN after filmed interviews.

Proposed card room in Lodi: No reason it cant be clean, safe and well-operated

Thursday, March 22, 2007

I first learned how to play poker when I was 6 or 7 years old, playing for my relatives' caches of pennies on most major holidays.Being a young man who quickly identified the value of money, I rapidly gained a certain awareness to the strategies and nuances employed by others to be successful at this great game.

Like many, many Lodians, I have been playing poker games with friends since high school. I must also admit to playing in several local Texas Hold 'em tournaments over the last few years. I actually had the good fortune to win one tournament at an event hosted by Lodi's premiere cigar smoking establishment, Stogie's. I am not at all ashamed to admit that I know more than a little about how this game is played. The proposed Wine Country Casino, which I live within walking distance of...

Thursday, March 22, 2007

If size matters, consider Tripper's in Frandor ... very significant. This poker/pool/sports bar mecca seemingly goes on forever. And ladies, to say the place is packed with guys would be an understatement - the male-to-female ratio in there is about 3-to-1. Just don't expect any of them to pay you any mind. The sports-bar dweller has more important things on his mind this month.

I stopped in to Tripper's one Saturday night during NCAA judgment week. With the Spartans taking on Indiana on the numerous TVs, both large and small, it seemed as though half of Lansing was in the building.

Funnily enough, there's a whole other contingent of men out front who are devoted entirely to another sport of sorts: Texas Hold 'Em. Tripper's holds an all-day tourney, and it was still going strong at around 10 p.m.

Shaking and stirring the men who would be Bond

Thursday, March 22, 2007

In "Casino Royale," Daniel Craig takes over the reigns of the iconic character of Agent 007, James Bond, in a film that re-boots the series by showing Bond on his first assignment.

Much like "Batman Begins" this story works with "Casino Royale" because it is based around such a timeless, intriguing character. Bond has existed in movies for 45 years, across 23 movies (21"official" films plus two black sheep) and seven actors. "Casino" is part prequel, part sequel and part remake, and re-invents the character by taking him back to his grim and gritty roots.

Originally played by Sean Connery, Bond was part thug, part high roller. He was a killer and a card player, a wine aficionado and a ladies man. The later actors that played the role refined Bond a little, and made him more civilized to fit in with the times, but Craig plays a more somber rendition of the Connery character - a thug turned thinking man, who got by on his wits and his chutzpa more than gadgets and gizmos.

Games at sea can be 'foreign' to some

For those travelers who like to visit a casino once in a while (obviously, I fall into that category), one of the nice things about taking a cruise is the opportunities it affords.

Not only do most cruise ships have their own casinos, but you will find an assortment of casinos at many of the island stops. You also can plan to hit some of the islands that feature casinos, such as Aruba and the Bahamas, home of the world's largest casino resort, Atlantis Paradise Island.

However, there's one thing to keep in mind, whether the casino is on a cruise ship or on an island. That also includes our own U.S. destinations -- Las Vegas, Atlantic City, etc.

John Preeg: Anglers should target snook and tarpon during warm weekend

Thursday, March 22, 2007

I hate to admit this, but I made a mistake last week. I believed the weatherman. By now, I should know better, but a warm weekend was predicted, and, consequently, I told everyone to go snook and tarpon fishing.

Naturally, a cold front came through, water temperatures dropped, and local fishermen should have been deep jigging for whiting, trout and sheepshead.

This was particularly perplexing in view of a recent phone survey done by my late mother confirming what I had always believed, that 98 percent of all Southwest Florida fishermen read this column and do exactly what I suggest.

Video-poker ruling welcome

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

The ruling by the S.C. Supreme Court that the Catawba Indian tribe may not offer video gambling on its reservation is good news for more than one reason.

The court, ruling unanimously, said allowing video poker on the York County reservation would violate a state law passed in 2000 that outlawed the games. This overturns an earlier decision by a special circuit court judge, which found that the tribe did have the right to operate video games on its reservation.

Judge Joseph Strickland essentially agreed with the Catawbas' contention that a 1993 land settlement gave the tribe the right to operate video poker on its property regardless of a statewide ban. Under that agreement, the tribe is explicitly permitted to operate traditional bingo games at two sites in the state, but video games are not specifically mentioned.

Under House Bill 77, which passed 110-60, 75 percent of the profits cities and counties would otherwise make off the cameras would go to the state. The money would go to the general fund "with the intent" that it be used to improve trauma care in the state, the bill states.

"There's no guarantee that it will go to the trauma network," state Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, D-Atlanta, said in arguing against the bill.
