Ever ask someone how much they get paid? It's like prying into someone's sex life.
We know because we asked far more than the 40 courageous people you'll meet in this story. The others said -- some more politely than others -- GO AWAY.
The whole thing started because one of The Oregonian's senior editors wanted to localize Parade Magazine's "What People Earn" feature -- you know, the one with all the mug shots noting name, job and pay. Parade has been doing this for so long -- more than 20 years -- that people actually ask to be featured.

The Los Angeles Lakers star, on the strength of his 65-point outing against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, followed by a 50-point game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, has stormed past Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets and now leads the NBA in scoring with a 30.0 average.
Bryant is doing a lot more than just scoring, as he has put himself back in the thick of the MVP race. Using USA TODAY's MVP Index, Bryant has jumped to third in the MVP rankings, only one point behind co-leaders Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Kevin Garnett of the Timberwolves.
USA TODAY subjectively picked 10 candidates and ranked them in six statistical categories that measure every aspect of the game.

T he best-kept secret in the franchise might be that the Portland Trail Blazers went through their entire NBA predraft process a year ago, held discussions, watched film, scouted games, handed out psychological tests, evaluated workouts, gathered reports and decided they absolutely had to have . . . Adam Morrison.
True story.
The Blazers' top scout was sold on Morrison -- lock, stock and mustache. Fans were lobbying for Morrison. Then, according to a source who was in the draft room, assistant general manager Kevin Pritchard, who was told "this is your draft," by owner Paul Allen, decided to pick Brandon Roy.

Gilbert Arenas came up far short of 50 points and far away from the basket on a shot to tie the game at Portland.
He didn't fall short on entertainment, though.
Arenas promised he would score 50 points against the Trail Blazers as part of his campaign to get back at the coaches who cut him from the U.S. national team last summer. Not only did he manage just 19 points, more than nine below his average, but he missed Washington's final shot in a 100-98 loss Tuesday night.

Fellow rookie Brandon Roy had 19 points, 12 rebounds, and three key baskets in the final 2:44 for the Blazers.
Antawn Jamison had 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Wizards. Gilbert Arenas had 19 points and 10 assists, but was just 4-of-16 from the field and came nowhere close to the 50 points he predicted he would score against the Blazers. Most of his points came from the free throw line, where he was 11-of-12.
With a chance to force the game to overtime, Arenas drove the ball down the lane and threw up a shot that fell well short of the rim as time ran out. Jamison hit a 3-pointer with 15.5 seconds left to get Washington within 97-96, but Jarrett Jack made two free throws for the Blazers.

Media Credit: APLos Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant gets fouled by Minessota Timberwolves' Mark Blount while scoring two in the first quarter of their NBA basketball game, Sunday in Los Angeles.
The Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns have held the NBA's best records for much of the season, but many teams have put up impressive runs to enter the ever-so-popular debate over "who is the best?"
Although Sunday's loss to the Orlando Magic snapped the Miami Heat's nine-game winning streak, the Heat have a remarkable 10-3 record since losing Dwyane Wade to injury. Shaquille O'Neal, averaging 20.5 points and 8 rebounds per game after Wade's injury, has led the Heat to victories over several quality teams.

The Lakers star lit up the Blazers for 65 Friday night, so it's highly unlikely the Wolves will be able to shut him down tonight.
EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - The debate raging last week around Lakers scoring star Kobe Bryant was whether or not he is a dirty player. That changed Friday, when Bryant reminded the NBA that the operative adjective in his case is not dirty but nasty. Nasty, as in the 65 points he dropped on the Portland Trail Blazers in a 116-111 overtime victory Friday night. That's the Bryant the Timberwolves will be coping with this evening at Staples Center, when they face Bryant and his mates for the fourth and...

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kobe Bryant scored 24 of his 65 points in the fourth quarter and added nine more in overtime for the Los Angeles Lakers, who snapped a seven-game losing streak Friday night with a 116-111 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.
It was the second highest-scoring game of Bryant's career and his third with 60 or more points ? including an 81-point outing against Toronto on Jan. 22, 2006 at Staples Center. He also had 62 against Dallas on Dec. 20, 2005, at Los Angeles. The All-Star MVP had 15 games with 50 or more points, including four this season. The Lakers are 11-4 when he cracks the 50-point plateau.
Bryant shot 23-for-39 from the field and was 11-for-12 from the free throw line. He averaged 35 points in his previous six games against Portland, including a 50-point effort on April 14, 2006.

In a performance that was memorable even for him, Kobe Bryant scored 65 points Friday night, leading the Lakers to a 116-111 overtime victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at Staples Center.
It was the second-highest total of Bryant's career, behind only last season's 81, and No. 4 in Lakers history.
He made 23 of 39 shots, including eight of 12 three-point tries. Four of those three-pointers came in the last 3:32 of regulation, as the Lakers ended a seven-game losing streak.

For the better part of three weeks, Kobe Bryant had been unable to escape the scrutiny of the league office, the endless replays of his flailing arms and the misery of the Lakers' seven-game losing streak.
It took the second-highest scoring game of his career for Bryant to put those issues in the past. The only national debate in the coming days will be whether the NBA has a more dazzling player, as opposed to a dirty one.
He brought the light at the end of the tunnel to the Lakers by scoring 65 points -- 33 in the fourth quarter and overtime -- and hitting eight 3-pointers in a 116-111 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers at Staples Center.

Guard Baron Davis, whose presence in back-to-back finale victories over the Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks was more than mere coincidence, thinks the Warriors can keep up their pace. Along with tonight's game against the SuperSonics, the Warriors close back-to-backs against the San Antonio Spurs (at home on March 26 and in Texas on April 7) and the Portland Trail Blazers (in Oregon on April 18).
"I think we're maturing a lot as a team," Davis said. "We understand now the importance of the first game and coming back after that and playing well enough and with enough energy to keep ourselves in the second game."
Warriors forward Matt Barnes thinks it's not even worth discussing the 1-15 mark, since those games were so rife with various injuries on Golden State's part.

Who'd watch that?
Millions of people, it turned out. Since its June 2005 debut, "Dancing With the Stars" has been a consistent hit. As the fourth season gets under way Monday night, Portlanders will be paying special attention. One day after drawing a hefty fine from the NBA, Jackson will look to help his team end a seven-game losing streak as they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.
Jackson and the Lakers were each fined $50,000 on Thursday after Jackson said the league was conducting a ``witch hunt'' against Kobe Bryant.
Bryant has recently received two one-game suspensions for striking players in the face after taking a shot. The league retroactively assessed Bryant with a flagrant foul for an elbow to Philadelphia's Kyle Korver last week, a play that didn't even draw a foul.
