The Rev. James Sauer was an extraordinarily versatile philosophy scholar who in 1997 earned a Distinguished Faculty Member award at St. Mary's University based on evaluations by his students, faculty colleagues said.
Sauer, a Presbyterian minister and a professor of philosophy and theology at St. Mary's for 14 years, died Friday of heart failure. He was 58.
A native of Richmond, Va., Sauer had been a professor of theology and philosophy and associate director at Institute Superieur de Kananga in Zaire from 1974 to 1978 and executive secretary for parish development for the Presbyterian Church in Canada in Toronto from 1978 to 1984.
Folks who once worked in the Holiday Inns internal audit department are coming back to Memphis later this summer for a 30th reunion.
The event will be Sept. 7 to 9 at Embassy Suites and will include a meet and greet on Saturday night and a golf scramble Saturday morning, said Rick Mitchell, organizer of the event. He is hoping to draw many of the 140 former Holiday Inn and Holiday Corp. employees who worked in the division from 1975 to 1985, along with 20 former company directors and executives to attend the event.

Top Hats swing at Burnt Store Presbyterian Church dance
The Top Hats swing band provided music for a lively social dance Friday night at Fellowship Hall in Burnt Store Presbyterian Church in Punta Gorda.
The band performed the hit dance tunes of the '40s and '50s. The turnout of about 60 people might have been light, but the reception by the audience to the music was overwhelmingly joyful. During one selection, "Dream," a fox trot, there were more people on the dance floor than there were sitting down.
