I'm hardly the first to note that the Republican Party — alleged keeper of family values — has as its two presidential favorites men with checkered marital careers. Indeed, the leader in the polls, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, holds the most dismal domestic record of any human being who has ever seriously run for president. Yet he remains immensely popular among social conservatives.
Could it be that 95 percent of the culture war was just a pretense to impeach Bill Clinton and tar Democrats?
One chuckles at a 2005 column by conservative David Brooks that holds up Giuliani, John McCain and Robert Kennedy as examples of political courage. According to Brooks, such men often believe that "private peccadilloes don't corrupt the public performance of his duties."

BOCA RATON — Cardinal Newman hitters found out Tuesday why major-league scouts and college recruiters already have shown interest in junior pitcher Navery Moore.
Moore, making only his second start of the season for Tennessee's Battleground Academy, looked in mid-season form in the Nashville-area team's 2-0 win against Newman in the second round of the Gary Carter National Grand Slam at West Boca Raton's field. The right-hander, whose fastball has been clocked at 94 mph, gave up no hits and recorded 12 strikeouts in 61/3 innings.
Moore completely baffled Newman hitters his first time through the Crusaders' lineup, striking out eight of the first nine batters he faced.

But her promising life was cut short when she was gunned down outside a Bayview community youth center where she and her brother had been Friday night, an innocent victim of apparent gang violence, police say.

I am responding to Joseph Micallef and his claim that America was founded on "God" and the "Bible." America was founded on a secular constitution that contains no mention of "god" or "Christianity." Back in 1797, America made a treaty with Tripoli, declaring that "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." This reassurance to Islam was written under Washington's presidency, and approved by the Senate under John Adams.
The idea our founding fathers had was that "governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed," which is contrary to Mr. Micallef's biblical concept of rule by divine authority. Nor are we governed by the Declaration of Independence. Its sole purpose was to "dissolve the political bands," not to set up a religious nation. Our Constitution deals with laws, taxation, representation, war, immigration, and so on, never discussing religion or biblical concepts.
The references to "Natures God," "Creator," and "Divine Providence" in the Declaration does not endorse Christianity. Thomas Jefferson, its author, was a Deist, opposed to orthodox Christianity and the supernatural. Our First Amendment forbids our government from promoting religion. So whenever a public official uses his or her office to advance religion, someone is offended . Therefore our founding fathers chose the wisest policy which is neutrality. Church and State are forever divorced. Our ...

There was a time in the distant past when curses were taken more seriously than they are now. Centuries ago, a person cursed with the full expectation that his swearing was more than a hasty expression of wrath or frustration.
A curse in the Middle Ages was viewed both by the curser and the one being cursed as a palpable threat. It was generally accepted that properly worded curses could cause herds of cattle to sicken, crops to wither, pregnant women to miscarry, strong men to waste away and even great empires to crumble.
In some belief systems, curses ranked high on the rosters of potential causes of human disease. And just as the administration of placebos might convince the credulous soul to feel cured, so, too, might a grimly delivered curse persuade an unskeptical person to retreat from radiant health and then sicken.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A mother and her boyfriend were sentenced to three years probation on Monday for having intercourse in front of the woman's 9-year-old daughter to teach the girl about sex.
Chief Family Court Judge Jeremiah S. Jeremiah Jr. sentenced Rebecca Arnold of Woonsocket, and her boyfriend, David Prata, to probation and a three-year suspended sentence after they pleaded no contest to a felony child neglect charge.
The judge said he wanted to spare the young girl, now 11, from testifying, according to Michael Healey, a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Lynch.

Wellington sophomore Ashley Brasovan established herself as one of the state's top distance runners last year when she won the 3,200 meters at the Class 4A state track championships, then in November took the girls state cross-country title for the second consecutive year.
Last week, Brasovan gained national recognition by winning the 2-mile run at the prestigious Nike Indoor Nationals meet in Landover, Md. Amazingly, it was the first time Brasovan had run a race indoors. Her time of 10:25.41 was just shy of the meet record and is the second-fastest 2-mile time in the state this season, just behind state leader Mandy Perkins (11:23.75) of Port Orange-Spruce Creek.
"She's the best talent in long distance running I've ever coached in 25 years," coach Antonis Loudaros said. "She's a tremendous talent. No one has the overall drive and talent and athletic maturity that she has for being so young, and she's very competitive."

In a new wrinkle for Michigan's battered economy, plastic surgeons are experiencing the worst downturn ever for cosmetic procedures while the treatments soar elsewhere in the country.
The pinch began two years ago and by mid-June of last year, "everything suddenly came to a standstill," said Dr. Michael Busuito, a Troy, Mich., plastic surgeon. "Husbands told their wives, 'I don't care if you want a face-lift. I could lose my job.' "
With job cuts, home sales stalled and profit-sharing checks gone, demand in Michigan has dwindled for cosmetic procedures, particularly big-ticket surgeries such as breast augmentation and tummy tucks.

Many rulers of the army and Queen's Navy would have gladly dispensed with doctors (I believe) and let the wounded take their chances but for the need to keep troops healthy enough to fight.
Large, concentrated bodies of men were vulnerable to communicable disease from biblical times. Wars turned on plagues; the halting of an invasion or the lifting of a siege, ascribed to Providence, was usually caused by sickness in the ranks. Historically, more soldiers and sailors died from "flux" and fevers than from enemy fire.
The huge disparity between actual losses and recorded battle deaths in the Civil War was due to rampant disease on both sides. More Americans died from fevers in the Spanish-American War of 1898 than from combat. Adm. Horatio Nelson wrote of the horrors of the West Indies station, and commissions in tropically serving regiments sold cheaply in the British army, but health problems were found everywhere.

If you don't study TV hard enough, you could end up in fast food.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Aronda Kirby and Digit Murphy were once married to men, received the tax breaks for married couples and were legally permitted to take family leave if their husbands or children got sick.
