Joanne Sokoloski, the county's chief of protocol, was understandably tacit when I tried to grill her about her role in facilitating Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet's visit to Dana Point on Friday and Saturday. She'd been down that road in 2003, when she helped host a trade event in the county Hall of Administration for Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Khoan Vu. It was a fairly low-key event, but word leaked out and there were suddenly three dozen protesters outside with signs and South Vietnamese flags and an effigy of Ho Chi Minh.
"I'm about trade, not politics," she told me with her trademark diplomacy last week. But for hundreds of others at least for Vietnamese-Americans it was very much about politics.
County Supervisor Janet Nguyen paid for one of the buses that shuttled protesters from Little Saigon to the St. Regis resort, where President Nguyen was leading the trade mission. Nguyen and her staff were out there protesting too. And, while there were criticisms that she wasn't taking a clear position, she was very clear about her objections in a letter written to Secretary of State Condi Rice.
