LAS VEGAS - If I were going to lay a bet on it, I'd take the odds against Las Vegas ever getting a NBA team, or a team from any of the major professional sports leagues.
It's not that Las Vegas isn't ready for an NBA, NFL, NHL or Major League Baseball team. It's that none of those leagues is ready for Las Vegas.
Too much money, too much idle time, far too many available vices - rich professional athletes based in Las Vegas would be inviting disaster.

The fan who bellowed "Fire Stotts!" after tipoff at Milwaukee Bucks home games in recent months got his wish last week, though that doesn't mean the team's new coach is on his side.
Larry Krystkowiak stuck up for Terry Stotts on Tuesday, saying his former boss has gone out of his way to be supportive in the past week and shaking his head at the harsh treatment Stotts received from some fans after a season filled with injuries to key players.
"It was pretty brutal _ some of our games, and people yelling, getting real personal," Krystkowiak said. "Teams have a hard time winning in this league without their best players, and our lineup was completely decimated _ four starters out.

SALT LAKE CITY The coach of one of the biggest surprise teams in the NBA is arguably the biggest surprise of the Utah Jazz.
Jerry Sloan, hard-nosed as a defensive bull of a player for 11 years and hard-line with young players as a coach the last 21, has relaxed his drill-sergeant tactics and shown patience with his youthful team.
The payoff: The Jazz, picked to battle for a playoff spot, own the league's fourth-best record (43-23) going into tonight's home game against the Golden State Warriors.

Well into the final quarter of the NBA?s regular season, here are nine burning questions that are just begging for answers:
Nash or Nowitzki ? who?s the MVP? Last week?s classic between the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns may be a microcosm of the season. It took two overtimes before the two best teams in the league settled things, and they were settled in favor of the Suns because of the most clutch player in the league: The two-time defending MVP. It?s not fair to argue in favor of Nowitzki just because he?s the best player on the team with the best record. Nash makes the good players around him look like stars, and the stars like superstars. Make it three in a row.
So, which of them will emerge from the flames of the red-hot West? Actually, neither. The Mavs and Suns are the two best teams, but neither of them will reach the Finals. That?s because the most fundamentally sound team, quiet and efficient all season, then lethal in the playoffs ? when defense matters ? is the San Antonio Spurs.

AUSTIN — The number of visitors to state parks has been inflated by more than 40 percent, according to an auditor's report released Monday that also urges the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to improve management and operation of its 108 parks.
The audit comes at a time when the agency wants a significant budget increase. State lawmakers told agency leaders to address the shortcomings outlined in the audit before making a case for more funding.
"I saw a whole lot of need for improvement in the financial management area. They are asking for a whole lot of money," Senate Natural Resources Chairman Kip Averitt, R-Waco, said after auditors from the state auditor's office and parks department officials responded to the Senate Finance Committee. "Until they give us some assurance that the money is going to be spent prudently, I think there's some reason to be concerned."

"I'm not a dirty player I never have been, never will be," Bryant told the Los Angeles Times. "It's ridiculous. If somebody wants to criticize me for the way I play on the basketball court, at least make it something that's somewhat realistic. Say I shoot too much. Don't just knock me for something that I'm just absolutely not."
Twice now this season, Bryant has received a one-game suspension for what equates to offensive flopping. As he did to San Antonio Spurs swingman Manu Ginobili earlier this season, Bryant nailed Minnesota guard Marko Jaric with a shot in the face by flailing his arms after a shot, trying to draw a foul.
Apparently, the league office went back and viewed the tape of Bryant's elbowing of Philadelphia forward Kyle Korver, and then planted an after-the-fact flagrant foul on Bryant's record.

The best story in the NBA doesn't involve Dirk Nowitzki or Steve Nash and it's got nothing to do with the resilient San Antonio Spurs or the surprisingly gritty Utah Jazz. In fact, let's just forget about the Western Conference for a moment.
The story that deserves our attention is taking place on the sunny shores of South Florida. It centers on three men — Pat Riley, Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade — who are destined for the Hall of Fame. Their injuries, an arthritic hip, torn knee cartilage and a separated shoulder, respectively, transformed what should have been a mundane title defense into an operatic tale with Riley, who does hyperbole better than anybody, providing voiceovers like Morgan Freeman.
It's a basketball story in three acts.

Point guard Luke Ridnour will return to the Sonics' starting lineup tonight at KeyArena against Golden State.
Ridnour, who has a herniated cervical disk, hasn't played since leaving the Sonics' March 4 win over Charlotte because of increasing stiffness in his neck. He went through a series of treatments, including wearing a brace, and returned to practice Thursday.
"It feels a lot better," said Ridnour, who has missed the past five games. "The range of motion is back to almost 100 percent, so that's the big key for me."

Guard Baron Davis, whose presence in back-to-back finale victories over the Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks was more than mere coincidence, thinks the Warriors can keep up their pace. Along with tonight's game against the SuperSonics, the Warriors close back-to-backs against the San Antonio Spurs (at home on March 26 and in Texas on April 7) and the Portland Trail Blazers (in Oregon on April 18).
"I think we're maturing a lot as a team," Davis said. "We understand now the importance of the first game and coming back after that and playing well enough and with enough energy to keep ourselves in the second game."
Warriors forward Matt Barnes thinks it's not even worth discussing the 1-15 mark, since those games were so rife with various injuries on Golden State's part.

The Bucks are one of the NBA's worst defensive teams, but that's just one of several nagging problems that ultimately led Harris and Sen. Herb Kohl, the team's owner, to fire coach Terry Stotts on Wednesday.

But if you?re making a list of players the Warriors can?t do without, Stephen Jackson shouldn?t take a backseat to anyone. Davis included.
Jackson, acquired in the eight-player trade with Indiana in mid-January, has been significantly better than expected and/or advertised. In less than two months, Jackson has become one of coach Don Nelson?s favorites, displaying the kind of versatility and playmaking Nelson loves.

The scoring race between Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is heating up, but both players will have something else on their minds when their teams play Thursday night in Denver.
The Nuggets and Lakers are engaged in a tight race for the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoff race. The Lakers (33-31) lead the Nuggets (31-31) by only one game. The Lakers won the first meeting in January and they play twice more next month.
The scoring race between Anthony and Bryant just adds to Thursday night's matchup (10:30 ET, TNT). Anthony leads the league with a 29.8 average and the fast-charging Bryant is second at 29.2. Both say the scoring title is a distant second to winning.

San Antonio Spurs big man Tim Duncan is the most productive center in the NBA.
Using a USA TODAY system that ranks the centers from all 30 teams, Duncan — listed as a power forward but in actuality a center most of the time for the Spurs — comes out as the most productive in the league. Every category from durability to free throw shooting was weighted equally. (The rankings in all categories were added together, and the player with the lowest total is theoretically the top center.)
Center has again become a glamour position with Miami's Shaquille O'Neal returning to his dominant ways, Houston's Yao Ming back from injury and playing like an MVP candidate again and Ohio State's Greg Oden on the horizon.

Manu Ginobili's return to the bench has not interfered with his ability to help guide the San Antonio Spurs to a season-best 12-game winning streak.
His especially inspired play of late has not gone unnoticed by the NBA, which today named the Spurs guard Western Conference Player of the Week honors.

No NBA general manager would undervalue the allure of an owner like Allen, who often has demonstrated his willingness to spend.

Football has long been the essential sport for Texans. It has even been said that there are only two sports in Texas - football and spring football. Though football remains as popular today as ever, our state has also developed into a basketball hotbed. Some of the best basketball in America is played in the Lone Star State, and this month Texans will experience March Madness.
Each March, 65 men's and 64 women's college basketball teams from across the nation compete in three-week tournaments to crown national champions. These captivating tournaments are coined March Madness because of their unpredictable nature. This year's tournaments are sure to have a distinct Texas flavor.
One of the biggest stories of this season has been Texas Tech coach Bob Knight's ascension to the all-time winningest men's coach. Coach Knight surpassed former North Carolina coach Dean Smith with his 880th career victory on January 1, and since then has added to his record victory total.
