Seattle 7, Rockies 4

Thursday, March 22, 2007

The Colorado Rockies are taking a cautious approach with Kaz Matsui's injured foot, and the results have been good so far.

Matsui had three singles in the Rockies' 7-4 loss to Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. Matsui, the club's starting second baseman, had been out since March 12 with a strained left foot.

He said he felt like it had healed, though he probably won't play in Thursday's game against Milwaukee.

The naked truth about gambling

Thursday, March 22, 2007

PEORIA, Ariz. ? A little after 8 a.m., Mark Lowe was naked on the practice field Tuesday ? and then his morning got weird.

It started as one of those wacky bets players make. As Seattle Mariners pitchers gathered to run, Lowe bet strength and conditioning coach Allen Wirtala that he couldn?t hit the foul pole with a 40-foot throw three times in a row.

And if he did?

Tribe bench status in flux

Thursday, March 22, 2007

The Indians came to spring training thirsting to know the answers to only two questions: Was Matt Miller totally recovered from the elbow surgery he had last year? And who would be the utility infielder?

Miller has responded by giving up two runs and striking out 16 in 7 1/3 innings. The second question has become almost as resistant to an answer as, ``What is the sound of one hand clapping?''

Which at times is the way -- with one hand -- Hector Luna seems to play the infield. Luna is part of an equation that becomes more complex as the exhibition season wears on.

Morrow's mesmerizing spring has Mariners considering promotion

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Brandon Morrow is presenting a dilemma for the Mariners. A welcome one.

A 22-year-old right-hander not quite one year removed from pitching for the University of California, Morrow is drawing attention in the Seattle's spring training camp. His numbers this month - just two hits allowed in 6 1-3, scoreless innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts - are as impressive as his work ethic and preparation.

Suddenly, Seattle is unsure what to do with its fifth overall draft choice from last June.

That was Barry Zito's idea, and it was typical Zito.

Avoid the negativity that surrounds Barry Bonds' chase of Henry Aaron's home run record? Hide from the snippy confrontations between the dour, condescending Bonds and the national media assigned to cover him, his home runs and the ongoing steroid drama surrounding him?

Mariners working with Johjima to shore up defense

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

PEORIA, Ariz. - The Seattle Mariners were one of the best defensive teams in baseball a year ago. There's no reason to expect anything different this season, even as the team works with catcher Kenji Johjima on his throwing.

Johjima has been bothered by a tender throwing elbow and Milwaukee took advantage on Sunday, twice successfully stealing on the Mariners' second-year catcher. Johjima also committed a throwing error during a rundown.

This season's defensive coach is John McLaren, who has returned to Seattle as manager Mike Hargrove's bench coach, after serving the same role under Lou Piniella with the Mariners from 1998-2002. One of McLaren's first tasks has been working with Johjima.

Jamie and Karen Moyer opened the first Camp Erin — named after a teenager they knew who died of cancer in 2000 — in Washington state in 2002. At the weekend camp, children and teens meet with grief counselors and interact with peers experiencing similar sorrow.

Royals 7, Giants (ss) 6

Friday, March 16, 2007

SURPRISE, Ariz. - With Barry Bonds moving up to third in the San Francisco Giants' lineup, Ray Durham has fit in well so far as the team's new cleanup hitter.

Durham homered twice, Bonds hit his third home run of spring training and a Giants split squad lost 7-6 to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

"I'm not a home run hitter," said Durham, who has started only 11 games in his career in the fourth spot. "I hit the ball in the gaps. That's me. Whether I hit three, four or five, I try to stay the same. I'm not trying to hit home runs, believe me. Those were line drives."

Soriano finds comfort zone

Friday, March 16, 2007

MESA, Ariz. -- Alfonso Soriano was all smiles Thursday about the prospect of being a regular in the Cubs' outfield.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella has said Soriano, who had a triple and two singles in a 9-3 win over a Seattle Mariners split squad, had all but proved he can be the everyday center fielder.

"That's good that the manager has confidence in the player," Soriano said before taking the field against the Mariners. "I feel very comfortable because I've worked to be a center fielder."

TUCSON, Ariz. -- After finding out he'd made the Texas Rangers' 40-man roster, Sammy Sosa hit a home run that went so far it must have felt like the good old days.

By making the 40-man roster, Sosa -- fifth on the career home run list -- is officially a big leaguer again.
