Cleveland diocese downsizing could involve at least 23 churches

Wednesday, June 6, 2007

CLEVELAND (AP) - At least 23 churches in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland likely face closure as part of a downsizing plan, but the eventual number could be even greater.

The eight-county diocese in northeast Ohio could close up to a fifth of its parishes, which would mean the shuttering of 46 to 48 churches, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Tuesday. The newspaper based the numbers on telephone interviews with parish representatives.

But diocese spokesman Bob Tayek said Tuesday that a specific number has not been determined following Bishop Richard Lennon's announcement last week that the number of churches will be reduced.

Wednesday, June 6, 2007
