Former Bryan teacher gets life for molesting boy

BRYAN, Texas (AP) - A former Bryan school teacher was sentenced today to two consecutive life terms in prison for sexually assaulting a child.

David Allen Vandyne pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and no contest to a second charge.

The 43-year-old was accused of abusing a 10-year-old boy from Austin, including drugging the boy's orange juice and raping him in his sleep.

GOP: Bush Should Adopt Bipartisan Plan

WASHINGTON - Several Republican senators Tuesday called for President Bush to implement a new war strategy based on recommendations by the Iraq Study Group, which advocated winding down the U.S. combat mission."The president needs bipartisan support if the United States is to sustain a long-term position in Iraq," said Sen. Baytown motorist impaled by tree limb dies

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) - The Department of Public Safety says a 34-year-old Baytown woman died after being impaled by a tree limb that fell through her sport utility vehicle's windshield during a thunderstorm.

Thirty-4-year-old Dora Alicia Cistillo was killed Sunday. Her boyfriend and his three children were in the Hummer H-3 but were not injured.

A trooper said the limb crashed through the windshield as Cistillo drove south on Farm to Market Road 226 near the Etoile area. Cistillo was taken to a Lufkin hospital, where she died of her injuries.

2008 Republicans: No Iran Nukes

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Republican candidates for U.S. president agreed on Tuesday that Iran must not develop atomic weapons even if a tactical nuclear strike is needed to stop it and accused Democrats of being soft on the issue.

The front-runners for the Republican Party nomination in the November 2008 election also squabbled among themselves over a broad immigration overhaul being debated by the U.S. Congress.

The gentlemanly debate featured small policy differences on a host of issues, and even electrical glitches caused by lightning, but no big gaffes or disputes that could immediately change the political dynamic in the closely fought Republican battle.

2 Fort Bliss soldiers killed in Iraq

FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - Defense officials say two soldiers from Fort Bliss were killed in Iraq when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb.

22-year-old Army Specialist Jeremiah D. Costello and 21-year-old Specialist Keith V. Nepsa died Saturday near Qayyarah.

Both were motor transport operators assigned to the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Bliss.
