Professional minor league baseball left Battle Creek last summer after more than a decade in town, seemingly leaving us with an empty C.O. Brown Stadium for the foreseeable future.

Man charged in indecent exposure cases

VALPARAISO | Authorities have charged an East Chicago man with indecently exposing himself at busy locations in Valparaiso.Hilario Torres Jr., 32, was charged Monday with two felony counts of indecent exposure. Prosecutors also filed for a habitual offender sentence if he is convicted.Torres has an extensive criminal history, including at least four convictions for public indecency in Lake County, as well as at least five unrelated convictions on charges ranging from auto theft to theft to obstr...

County might expand jail addiction program

VALPARAISO | The Porter County commissioners called on the sheriff Tuesday evening to expand a successful substance abuse treatment program at the jail.Commissioner Bob Harper, who works as a defense attorney, said male inmates have to wait to get into the program because of space limitations.He asked Sheriff Dave Lain to see if Porter-Starke Services, which administers the program, would be willing to provide an additional instructor for male inmates."I think it's just another thing we can do t...
