LOCAL SCENE: Wells is enjoying her time on tennis court

Sunday, June 24, 2007

Whitney Wells knows the odds are against her making a big splash in professional tennis. After all, the former Fresnan is starting her pro career at age 28.

"The girls I competed against are all retired now," Wells jokes.

Indeed, Wells is six months older than Martina Hingis, who is back on tour after retiring for a few years. She's four years older than Kim Clijsters, who retired earlier this year.

Area Hams take over airwaves in contest

Sunday, June 24, 2007

The gas generator putters quietly as three people huddle over a table full of electronics in the late-afternoon heat.

A voice from New Brunswick, Canada, crackles over a speaker. Call signs and locations are exchanged and confirmed, and then the voice is gone. The team moves on, searching for its next score.

This weekend, seven of these teams called Santa Fe Community College home as more than 30 amateur radio operators ("Hams," as they like to be known) competed with other operators all across North America in the 75th annual Field Day. The 24-hour event, which started at 2 p.m. Saturday and doesn't conclude until 2 this afternoon, is both a friendly competition and an emergency readiness drill.

Learning an explosive job

Small resorts, big escape

Sunday, June 24, 2007

The small wooden cottage atop a steep hill has no air conditioning, but a soft breeze through louvered windows flutters the sheer white curtains at my balcony door. The trade winds that once carried tall ships from around the world to Antigua today carry to my room the smell of tropical flowers.

"When you first wake up, I don't want you to think even for a second, 'Where am I?' " Michelin says. "I want you to awaken and feel where you are, smell where you are, hear where you are."

That sense of place, of foreignness, of being far from home, goes a long way toward explaining the appeal of a small resort. Then, too, there is the intimacy that comes with being one of a handful of guests, rather than one of an anonymous crowd of hundreds moving through a high-rise mega-resort.
