Thursday, March 22, 2007

ATLANTA - Miami has endured so much adversity this season that the Heat's dwindling lead hardly concerned Jason Williams.

"It seems like someone has been out for us all year long," Williams said. "So we just have to keep doing what we have to do to win."

Williams had 21 points and eight assists, and the Heat beat the Atlanta Hawks 91-83 Wednesday night for their 10th victory in 11 games.

Art imitates video games

Thursday, March 22, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Irish playwright Oscar Wilde once said, "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life."

Students participating in a novel design contest might rephrase the famous quotation to something like, "Art imitates video games that imitate life."

Students at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, Academy of Art University in San Francisco and Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles are teaming up with Redwood City-based Electronic Arts Inc. to produce exhibitions that celebrate "The Sims."

FBI investigates allegations of underage prostitution on Craigslist

Thursday, March 22, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - An eight-month investigation of underage prostitution advertised on Craigslist, a popular Internet classified site, led FBI agents to raid the home and photo studio of a south Sacramento man, court documents say.

In an affidavit unsealed this week, an FBI agent alleges that Paul Yoshi Moore, 46, took racy photographs of three Sacramento-based girls, one 14 and two 17, and posted them in the Web site's "erotic services" section.

No charges have been filed in the case. FBI officials declined comment, saying the case is under investigation.

FedEx 3Q Earnings Dip 2 Pct. on Slowdown

Thursday, March 22, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? FedEx Corp. reported a 2 percent drop in third-quarter earnings Wednesday, blaming the decline largely on an economic slowdown that tested the company's ability to quickly adjust costs. The shipping company said it also will have to struggle to keep up with a long-range goal of 10 percent to 15 percent growth a year in per share earnings.

But FedEx executives expressed confidence the economy would improve and said the company is well positioned to take advantage of it.

For the quarter ended Feb. 28, earnings slipped to $420 million, or $1.35 per share, from $428 million, or $1.38 per share, a year earlier.

Longhorns NFL rookies looking to impress

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Any NFL prospect worth an eight-figure bonus check knows it's all about the 40-yard dash.

That's why cornerback Tarell Brown, the now former Longhorn, opted to run the important sprint again Wednesday. His audience included more than 100 NFL scouts, who were on hand at Texas' Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Complex to scrutinize the latest round of potential NFL rookies from UT. Brown ran a passable time in the mid 4.4-second range during the NFL combine last month.

But a faster time would produce a buzz, possibly a higher placement in next month's draft and more zeroes in the bonus check.

Lawmakers Warn FBI Over Spy Power Abuse

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

WASHINGTON - Republicans and Democrats alike sternly warned the FBI on Tuesday that it risks losing its broad power to collect telephone, e-mail and financial records to hunt terrorists because of rampant abuses of the authority.

The threats were the latest blow to the embattled Justice Department and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who is already on the defensive and fighting to keep his job over the firings of federal prosecutors.

The warnings came as the department's chief watchdog, inspector general Glenn A. Fine, told the House Judiciary Committee that the FBI engaged in widespread and serious misuse of its authority to issue national security letters, which resulted in illegally collecting data from Americans and foreigners.

Five hot finds

Monday, March 19, 2007

1) Kellogg's All-Bran crackers: You probably think of All-Bran as a cereal, and not as one of the "fun" ones, either. But Kellogg's has spun the brand off into a new line of crackers, and they're surprisingly tasty. The garlic herb flavor has just enough bite to make the crackers snackable right out of the box. And with plenty of whole grain and fiber, they're even healthy. $2.79, at Wal-Mart and grocery stores.

2) Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, "Living With the Living": I've been rocking out to the latest CD from indie rock icon Ted Leo for a few weeks now, but Tuesday, everyone else gets the opportunity with the official release. Leo's never shied away from politics, but this is his most political record yet; that said, the angular, infectious sound is enough to make you forget your troubles -- political or otherwise -- and get movin'.

3) "Icons": I came across this program on the G4 network by accident, and since it was profiling comics legend Frank Miller, I gave it a look. For a half-hour program, the episode did a surprisingly good job at providing a career overview of Miller's fascinating and seminal career. Geared toward young men, the series profiles people, groups, publications and events iconic to that demographic, including Kevin Smith, Seth Green, Lollapalooza, The Onion and the Suicide Girls.

The scribbled-out portion of the lineup card next to Denton Guyer’s Kylee Crosek had more than a few people scratching their heads.Instead of pitching, which was the original decision, the freshman was now slated to start in centerfield. “I was surprised,” Denison skipper Ashli Wigington said. “Whoever was pitching, we still had to hit the ball.”The Lady Yellow Jackets broke out of their offensive slump against Guyer’s No. 2 pitcher, Victoria Archer, in a 6-1 ...

Letter: Don't be so gullible and soft-hearted

Monday, March 19, 2007

Paul Smith knew the rules and ignored them at his peril. The fact that he is 85 and a Pearl Harbor veteran does not change the fact that he violated the rules of the Riviera Golf Estates Homeowners Association.

Surely, since he has been making and "selling" his dominoes for many years, he should have applied for a Collier County business license, filed a tax return for his business and complied with all the OSHA, county and state fire and building codes.

The facts are what they are, whether he makes a "little profit" or takes his reward for his work as a "donation." He is in violation of the association's rules, state and county codes and his "profit, reward or donations" are subject to state and federal taxes.

Letters to the Editor: March 19

Monday, March 19, 2007

The wife and I went to the beach at 15th Avenue South in Naples as we often do to watch the sunset.

The other night there must have been close to a thousand seagulls of various kinds sitting on the sands.

A few minutes after we sat down, a couple of grandparents, a mother and father and two young children arrived.

Barnes denies interest in Kentucky

Monday, March 19, 2007

SPOKANE, Wash. ? Forget any of those rumors that Texas Coach Rick Barnes may be headed to Kentucky if the Wildcats fire Tubby Smith.

"I don't want any other college job," Barnes said after his fourth-seeded Longhorn team was ousted from the NCAA tournament in the second round, thrashed by fifth-seeded Southern California 87-68.

Smith's Cats fell to Big 12 champion Kansas 88-76 in a second-round game Sunday in Chicago, and many wonder if athletic director Mitch Barnhart might make a change after a couple of statements of questionable support the last two weeks.
